The Wisconsin Statue: Miss Forward

Standing atop Wisconsin’s State Capitol dome is the gilded form of a lady pointing her arm toward the south. Often misidentified as “Miss Forward,” the statue is actually named Wisconsin. She stands 15 feet, 5 inches tall and weighs in at a svelte three tons. The sculptor who created Wisconsin was Daniel Chester French, the same fellow who made the statue of Abraham Lincoln that sits in Washington’s Lincoln Memorial. Wisconsin has graced the Capitol dome since 1914. UW students from the 1950s until the 1980s called her “Mrs. Rennebohm.” referring to Oscar Rennebohm, governor from 1947 to 1951 and owner of the chain of Rennebohm Drug Stores. Her outstretched arm, the saying went, was pointing out a location for a new store.

The art for the Badger Pride Wall was created for WAA by Madison illustrator Nate Koehler.
