Grateful Red

Friend of the Badger

UW–Madison students have been called many things. Some epithets are applied by rival schools, and some are insults that they hurl at each other. But the student section at the Kohl Center gave itself its own nickname: The Grateful Red. The students who attend the men’s basketball games wear a uniform of tie-dyed T-shirts — a nod to the Grateful Dead and its Deadheads, and a tradition that debuted in 2002 following the departure of then-coach Dick Bennett. Prior to the arrival of the Grateful Red, the student section had been known as “Mr. Bennett’s Neighborhood.”
