Students tossing canes through the field goal post.

Cane Toss

To UW law students, Homecoming means one thing: the annual cane toss. Before kickoff of the Homecoming football game, third-years march down the field at Camp Randall Stadium, wearing bowler hats and carrying canes. When they reach the south end zone, they try to throw their canes through the goal posts and then catch them before they hit the ground on the other side. A successful catch means the newly minted attorney will win his or her first case. The tradition may be pure superstition, but it’s totally legal.
